Dahua ConfigTool: Discovering Devices on LAN
Dahua ConfigTool is a free Windows utility that scans the local network and lists all Dahua devices present. It is the fastest way to locate cameras and recorders during a commissioning visit — particularly useful when DHCP has assigned unknown IP addresses, or when a device has lost its configured static IP after a reset.
Note: ConfigTool only discovers Dahua devices connected directly to the same LAN segment as the installer's laptop. Cameras connected to the PoE ports on the back of an NVR appear as NVR channels — they are not independently discoverable by ConfigTool unless they are on an external switch.
Prerequisites
- Windows PC or laptop on the same LAN as the Dahua devices
- ConfigTool downloaded and installed (free from Dahua)
- Dahua cameras, NVRs, or other devices powered on and connected to the network
Steps
- Download and install ConfigTool from the Dahua website or support portal
- Launch ConfigTool
- On opening, ConfigTool performs an automatic scan of the local network. All discovered Dahua devices appear in the main list showing:
- Device type (NVR, IP Camera, PTZ, etc.)
- IP address currently assigned
- MAC address
- Serial number
- Firmware version
- If expected devices do not appear, click Refresh to rescan
- To search for a device at a known IP that did not auto-discover, type the IP address in the manual search field and press Enter
- To open a device's web interface directly from ConfigTool, click Web next to the device entry — the system default browser opens the login page at that device's IP
Common use cases on a commissioning visit
- Unknown IP after DHCP assignment: Run ConfigTool to find the current IP, then set a static address via the web interface or ConfigTool's network settings
- Multiple cameras on a new install: ConfigTool lists all devices simultaneously — the installer can note all IPs before starting configuration, or batch-change IPs from within the tool
- Post-reset device: After a factory reset a device reverts to DHCP — ConfigTool finds it immediately without needing to scan the router's DHCP table
Changing a device IP directly from ConfigTool
ConfigTool allows direct IP changes without opening each device's web interface:
- Select the device in the list
- Click Modify IP (or equivalent button depending on ConfigTool version)
- Enter the required static IP, subnet mask, and gateway
- Enter the device admin credentials when prompted
- Click OK — the device will update its IP and reconnect
This is significantly faster than accessing each device individually on a large install.
