Dahua IP Camera: Face Detection Setup
Dahua IP Camera: Face Detection Setup
Face Detection triggers an alarm when the camera identifies a human face in the scene. It does not perform recognition or match against a database — it simply detects that a face is present. This is useful for reception areas, access points, and any location where footfall tracking or face-triggered recording is needed.
> Note: Face Detection is different from Face Recognition. Detection ships on most Dahua AI cameras at no extra licence cost. Recognition requires a dedicated AI-licensed model or integration with DSS/IVSS.
Prerequisites
- Camera must list "Face Detection" in its feature set. Most Dahua AI and SMD cameras support it.
- Adequate frontal lighting. Side-lit or heavily backlit scenes degrade detection rate significantly.
- Camera should be mounted at roughly face height — 2.0–2.5 m is the recommended range for good detection angles.
Enabling Face Detection
- Log in to the camera web interface.
- Navigate to Setting > Event > Face Detect.
- Tick the Enable checkbox to activate face detection.
- Optionally enable Face Enhancement — this applies image processing to improve clarity of detected faces in snapshots. Tick the checkbox if face images will be reviewed or exported.
Configuring Alarm Linkages
Under the Face Detect page, configure what happens when a face is detected:
| Linkage | When to Use |
|---|---|
| Record | Clip recording on face trigger — useful for evidence capture |
| Snapshot | Still image snapshot — lightweight alternative to video clip |
| Relay Output | Trigger external device (door chime, light) |
| Send Email | Push email notification to a configured SMTP address |
| Audio | Play a pre-recorded audio warning over the camera's speaker |
Set an Active Period to restrict detection to operating hours. Outside the active period, detections are ignored.
Setting the Detection Zone
Some camera models let you define a sub-region of the frame for face detection rather than analysing the entire scene. This reduces false positives from distant faces or reflections.
- Click Area or Region on the Face Detect page.
- Draw the detection zone over the area of interest (e.g., covering the door opening, not the entire car park).
- Save the region before closing the page.
Snapshot Storage
For face snapshots to be saved, configure a snapshot schedule:
- Setting > Storage > Schedule — add a snapshot plan for the "Face Detect" event type.
- Set the snapshot destination (SD card, FTP, NAS, or NVR storage depending on installation).
Testing
Walk into the camera's field of view facing the lens and check:
- The Event > Log records a Face Detect event with a timestamp.
- If snapshots are enabled, a face image is saved to the configured destination.
- Any alarm linkages (relay, email) fire as expected.
If detection is inconsistent, improve frontal lighting and confirm the camera angle is not too steep — cameras mounted directly overhead often fail to detect faces looking downward.
