Dahua LPR Camera: Physical Install and Positioning
Dahua's ITC-series cameras are dedicated licence plate recognition (LPR) units that capture and read vehicle plate numbers in real time. Correct physical positioning is critical — a poorly mounted LPR camera will fail to capture plates reliably regardless of software configuration.
How ITC LPR Cameras Work
The camera continuously captures vehicle images and processes them on-board to extract the plate string. During NVR playback, operators can search by time/date to browse plate thumbnails, or enter a specific plate number to find matching captures. The system supports entrance/exit management, parking lot access control, and traffic security applications.
Lane Positioning Options
ITC-series cameras can be mounted in two positions relative to the lane:
Centre Mount
The camera is installed directly above the centre of the lane, facing down the road.
- Relationship between mounting height (H) and minimum capture distance (X): X ≥ 1.7 × H
- Example: at 6 m mounting height, minimum capture distance is 10.2 m.
- Preferred for single-lane or narrow installations where a central gantry is practical.
Side Mount
The camera is installed to one side of the lane at a diagonal angle to the vehicle direction.
- Same height-to-distance formula applies: X ≥ 1.7 × H
- The camera must be angled to keep the plate image within the capture zone — typically 15–30° horizontal offset maximum.
- Side mounting suits installations where a central overhead position is not available (e.g., existing wall or pole at the lane edge).
General Positioning Guidelines
- Mounting height: 3.5–6 m is the typical working range for most ITC models. Check the specific model's datasheet for its rated capture height.
- Camera tilt: Angle the camera downward toward the vehicle plate, not horizontal. The plate should occupy a significant portion of the frame.
- Lane coverage: One ITC camera covers one lane. Two-lane sites require two cameras.
- Approach distance: Ensure the minimum capture distance is achieved before the vehicle reaches the stop line or barrier.
- Lighting: ITC cameras include integrated IR illumination for night-time capture. Avoid positions where ambient light sources (sun, reflective surfaces) create lens flare directly into the capture zone during daytime.
NVR Compatibility
Most ITC-series models integrate with all standard Dahua NVR models. The following NVR models are excluded from compatibility with certain ITC cameras — verify against the specific camera and NVR datasheets before quoting a combined system.
Initial Setup Path
After physical install:
- Use ConfigTool or direct web access to assign an IP address to the camera.
- Follow the camera's built-in Quick Configuration Guide — the ITC cameras include a step-by-step wizard.
- For ITC215 and ITC237 models: refer to the ITC215/ITC237 Initial Setup guide.
- For integration with DSS software: follow the LPR-to-DSS configuration guide.
Commissioning Verification
Drive a vehicle through the lane at the expected approach speed and verify:
- The plate appears sharp and clearly legible in the captured image.
- The plate string is correctly read and logged (check the LPR event log in the NVR or DSS).
- Night-time captures are sharp with the integrated IR — test at least one after dark before sign-off.
If plates are overexposed, adjust the camera's exposure compensation or reposition away from direct sun glare. If recognition rate is low, check plate angle versus camera angle and confirm the vehicle is within the rated capture distance range.
