Dahua NVR: Formatting the Hard Drive
A new HDD installed in a Dahua NVR or DVR must be formatted before the system will record to it. Formatting clears all existing data on the drive and prepares it for surveillance recording. The NVR will prompt for a format on first boot if it detects an unformatted drive — this guide covers the manual process via the on-screen interface.
Warning: Formatting is irreversible. All existing footage on the drive is lost. Confirm with the site team before formatting any drive that may contain recordings the client wants to retain.
Prerequisites
- Dahua NVR or HDCVI DVR
- HDD physically installed in the unit (check seating and SATA/power connections if not detected)
- Admin access to the local interface
Steps
- From the Main Menu, select Storage.
- Select HDD Manage (on older firmware this may appear as HDD Manager).
- The installed drives are listed with their status (Normal, Unformatted, Error). Select the drive to format.
- Click Format.
- A confirmation prompt appears — click Yes to proceed.
- Click Apply, then Save.
- The NVR will reboot to complete the format. This is normal behaviour.
Post-format checks
- After reboot, return to Storage > HDD Manage and confirm the drive status shows Normal and the full capacity is displayed.
- Navigate to Storage > Schedule and verify the recording schedule is set — a formatted drive with no schedule will not record.
- Check the Info > Log to confirm recording events are being written.
Multiple HDDs
If the system has more than one HDD, format each drive individually. The NVR supports grouping drives into recording groups, allowing different channels to write to specific drives — useful on larger systems where installers want to isolate footage per zone.
Troubleshooting
