M&K V+ Series Subwoofers: Setup Guide

The M&K Sound V+ Series are sealed-cabinet powered subwoofers: the V10+, the THX Certified Select V12+, and the THX Certified Ultra V15+. The V12+ and V15+ add BLE (Bluetooth) control via a companion app with Auto EQ; the V10+ uses physical phase and crossover controls. This guide covers UK mains/voltage setup, hookup, placement, phase, crossover, app control, multi-sub use, home-cinema integration, troubleshooting, and the system set-up checklist.

Mains and power cord (UK installs)

A voltage selector sits next to the AC inlet on the back panel, factory-set for the destination market. The UK and Europe standard is 230V — always confirm the selector is set correctly before powering on; slide it if needed.

The power cord is detachable. Always plug the cord into the subwoofer first, then into the wall socket. Do not use a "switched" socket on the back of a receiver/amp. Don't connect to mains until all system wiring is complete.

Hookup

V+ subs use line-level phono (RCA) inputs. If the receiver/processor has a line-level sub output (labelled Sub, Sub Out, SW, or LFE), use it — that's the preferred connection.

1. Set the VOLUME control to MIN.

2. Attach the power cord to the sub, then to the mains.

3. Set the rear power switch to AUTO or ON:

• AUTO — sits in standby until an audio signal arrives, then wakes; drops back to standby after a few minutes of silence (it draws a small standby current).

• ON — fully active regardless of the rest of the system.

1. Play music, confirm the satellites/mains work, then slowly raise BASS VOLUME until the sub balances with the mains.

> V12+ note: it has a fixed-gain "THX MODE" detent on the volume control — in that position the level is set by the receiver/processor bass management only. Click the control out of THX mode for normal adjustable volume.

Placement

V+ subs work in most positions, but the room dictates bass quality. The proven "subwoofer crawl": put the sub at the listening seat, play bass-heavy music, then move around the candidate locations — the spot with the tightest, most defined, highest-impact bass is the best home.

• Place the sub as close to a solid wall as possible (a few inches at most) — greater gaps cause reflected-sound phase anomalies that wreck bass. Sometimes aiming the driver into the wall 1"–2" off it sounds best.

• Avoid corners near doorways/openings; corners can excite room modes and sound boomy — try a more central wall position instead.

• Allow ventilation clearance around the rear heat sink/back plate (the amp is mounted there and runs warm). Don't drape it, box it in an unventilated cabinet, or site it near baseboard/forced-air heaters. Not for outdoor or humid use.

• One sub usually suffices in stereo or multichannel — directionality below ~80Hz isn't locatable by ear. M&K satellites cross over to the sub at 80Hz (the Dolby/THX spec).

Phase (V10+ without BLE)

The V10+ has a variable 0–180° phase control to align the sub with the mains. Run a phase test: play familiar stereo material (a CD is easier than complex surround) through L/R mains plus sub, listen to the mid-bass (70–100Hz), and switch between 0° and 180°. The setting with tighter, more defined low bass wins. With multiple subs, test each individually with the others off. If there's no audible difference, leave it at 0°. For precision, use pink noise plus a spectrum analyser at the listening position and pick the setting with the strongest, flattest 70–100Hz response.

Crossover (V10+ without BLE)

Modern home-cinema receivers/processors provide the high-pass/low-pass bass management. With one of these, set the rear CROSSOVER CONTROL to LFE so the receiver owns the crossover — usually the best integration. If the receiver has no internal crossover, use the variable control to set the sub's roll-off: 80Hz with larger mains, 110Hz with smaller satellites. A good starting point is the lowest frequency on the main/satellite spec sheet.

App control (V12+ / V15+ with BLE)

Download the M&K companion app (Apple App Store / Google Play). To connect: power the sub on (status light red or blue), open the app, go to Peripherals, Scan for devices and Connect. Repeat for each sub and rename each one so they're identifiable. App functions:

• Volume — drag the ring, fine-tune with +/-, or type an exact value. Presets (Normal/Music/Movie) are user EQ modes; Night Mode cuts max power 75% and level by half; THX Mode locks volume and crossover to THX spec (presets and Night still work). The V12+/V15+ also keep a manual volume knob on the amp panel — use the centre position for THX.

• Crossover — low-pass adjustable 42Hz–500Hz; toggle Variable/LFE (app vs AVR); adjustable Slope (higher = steeper).

• Phase — adjusts signal delay to blend the sub; toggle Variable/AVR.

• Delay — set the sub-to-seat distance (5–80ft / 1.5–24m) for acoustic time alignment; feet/metres toggle.

• Manual EQ — 4 independent EQ bands (frequency, gain, Q).

• Auto EQ — corrects room anomalies: enable the toggle, press Start, sweep up to 3 positions near the seat, then Calculate to apply. Repeat per sub.

• Settings — Audio Sense standby timeout (5/10/20/30 min or always on); Reset to Default.

Multiple subwoofers

Two or more subs improve impact, definition, output and dynamic range. Follow all placement rules, plus: place subs at equal distances from the listening seat to avoid phase issues, phase-test each, and use a "Y" connector if the receiver has only one phono sub output. With a 5.1/7.1 processor, the single .1 output drives all subs.

Home-cinema integration

The sub reproduces all bass from the main channels plus the LFE (.1) effects track. In bass management, "large" vs "small" speaker refers to the satellites' size only — the V+ works in both modes, but M&K recommends setting all speakers to "Small" for proper filtering, lowest distortion and maximum dynamic range. Connect the line-level phono sub output to the sub's phono input and confirm the subwoofer is set to "On"/"Yes" in the receiver setup menu.

System set-up checklist

1. Find the best sub location for maximum output and flattest response (often the corner nearest the seat).

2. Aim the front (and surround) speakers for flat response and best imaging.

3. Set all speakers to "Small" for correct high-/low-pass operation.

4. Calibrate all speakers and the sub to the same level (typically 75dB) with a sound-level meter or the receiver's auto-calibration mic.

5. Confirm all five main channels are wired in phase, and that sub and mains are in phase at the 80Hz crossover (switch the sub Phase +/- while a partner listens to ~80Hz material; pick the setting with the most bass at the seat).

6. Place L/C/R equidistant from the seat; put surrounds to the sides of the seat (fall back to ceiling or rear wall if needed). Record all processor settings for future reference.

Troubleshooting (quick reference)

• No output: check live AC socket and cord; power switch to ON; BASS LEVEL above MIN; back-panel power LED — if dark, unplug and check/replace the fuse with the correct value (wrong value voids warranty and risks fire). If a new fuse blows instantly, call your dealer.

• Cuts out after long high-volume use: the thermal protection has tripped — unplug, rest 30 minutes, reconnect. Frequent trips? Contact your dealer.

• Weak mid-bass transition: redo the phase test / reverse the phase switch.

• Hum or buzz: keep speaker and phono cables away from AC cords and power supplies; remove inputs (leave it on mains) and raise BASS LEVEL — hum present means the sub is the source, otherwise look upstream; check for AC ground loops (share the receiver's socket, try reversing the plug).

Service and warranty

Servicing is dealer-routed — contact your M&K dealer and obtain authorisation before returning a unit. Always replace fuses with the correct value; an incorrect fuse voids warranty.
