Naim Multiroom Scope: Compatible Product Families and Third-Party Limitations
Naim's multiroom system delivers synchronised playback across Naim devices on the same network. This guide clarifies which products participate in the native multiroom group, and what the installer can offer when the client asks about mixing Naim with other brands.
How Naim Multiroom Works
The Focal & Naim app allows the installer or end user to group compatible Naim streamers and speakers. Once grouped, all devices in the zone play in sync. Zone membership is managed dynamically zones can be combined or split without restarting the system. Each device retains independent volume control within the group.
Naim Products That Support Multiroom
The following product families participate in Naim native multiroom:
- Uniti range: Atom, Star, Nova
- ND series: ND5 XS 2, NDX 2, ND555
- Mu-so range: Mu-so and Mu-so Qb (1st and 2nd Generation)
- Legacy streamers: NDX, SuperUniti, UnitiLite, Uniti Qute
Any combination of the above can be grouped together, allowing scalable multi-zone deployments across a site.
Third-Party Devices Cannot Join a Naim Zone
Naim's multiroom protocol is proprietary. Third-party audio products cannot be grouped with Naim devices via the Focal & Naim app. This applies even if the third-party device supports UPnP, AirPlay, or Chromecast. Affected categories include:
- Wireless speakers from other manufacturers
- Smart speakers (Sonos, Bose, Apple HomePod)
- Third-party AV receivers and amplifiers
Alternatives for Mixed-Brand Sites
When the installation scope includes non-Naim devices alongside Naim streamers, the following streaming protocols allow independent room-by-room playback, though without synchronisation:
- AirPlay 2 simultaneous playback to multiple AirPlay 2 devices including Naim, from Apple sources
- Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, Qobuz Connect, Chromecast stream to each device individually; no zone sync between Naim and non-Naim
For fully synchronised multizone audio, the specification should be all-Naim.
