Naim Network Infrastructure Requirements and Troubleshooting Guide
A stable network is a prerequisite for reliable Naim streaming performance. This guide covers the infrastructure decisions that affect the system most: router age, extension methods, mesh behaviour, and how to run a diagnostic scan.
Router Assessment
Most modern routers work with Naim streamers, but the installer should assess the site router before commissioning. Key factors:
- Age and quality of the router (ISP-supplied units older than 5 years are high-risk)
- Wi-Fi coverage relative to device locations
- Number of concurrent connected devices competing for bandwidth
When the site router is likely to cause problems, recommend a replacement that supports dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz), Gigabit Ethernet ports, Wi-Fi 5 or Wi-Fi 6.
Avoid HomePlug and Mains Extenders
Naim advises against HomePlug adaptors and mains extenders on any Naim installation. Powerline devices transmit data over the mains electrical wiring and introduce:
- Electrical noise that degrades audio performance
- Unstable connections incompatible with uninterrupted streaming
Use wired Ethernet or a high-quality mesh system instead.
Wireless Extenders Use With Caution
Wireless extenders frequently create isolated sub-networks. This breaks communication between a Naim device and the Focal & Naim app, producing:
- Playback dropouts
- Delayed control response
- Inconsistent multiroom zone synchronisation
If an extender must remain on site, configure it to broadcast the same SSID as the main router and confirm it supports seamless roaming before signing off.
Mesh Networks
Mesh systems are generally better than extenders but require careful deployment. Unlike extenders, mesh nodes relay traffic via a chain back to the gateway. Long chains can introduce:
- Data loss or increased latency
- Signal handoff confusion between nodes
- Missed app-to-device communication
Recommended mesh deployment practices:

Note: Naim is actively testing mesh systems. Results vary by brand and configuration.
Running a Network Diagnostic Scan
If connectivity issues persist after infrastructure checks, run a network scan via the Focal & Naim app (v7.5 or above, Android/iOS):
- Ensure the Focal & Naim app is updated to v7.5 or above.
- Open the app and navigate to the My Devices screen.
- Tap the question mark icon in the top-right corner.
- Note the User ID shown (required if escalating to Naim support).
- Position the phone or tablet 35 metres from the main router.
- Tap Network Scan and allow the process to complete without minimising the app.
