Cambium cnMaestro: Device Onboarding and Firmware Updates
cnMaestro is Cambium's cloud management platform. It provides a single management interface for cnPilot and XV/XE Wi-Fi APs, cnMatrix switches, and cnWave backhaul nodes. This article covers the practical onboarding and firmware update workflow relevant to a Habitech install.
Deployment Options

For most Habitech-deployed sites, cnMaestro X cloud is the appropriate choice. The free tier supports management of most device types.
Onboarding a New Device
- Create a Network and Site in cnMaestro — this is the organisational container for all devices at a location.
- Create an AP Group — defines the SSID profiles, VLAN assignments, radio settings, and security policy that will apply to APs joining this site.
- Claim the device — enter the serial number or scan the device QR code in the cnMaestro interface. The device is pre-associated to the site before it ships to site.
- Connect to network — when the AP or switch is powered up and gets an IP address, it contacts cnMaestro and receives its configuration automatically. No local console or CLI required.
The AP is operational from first power-up, with SSIDs broadcasting and VLANs applied.
Firmware Updates
cnMaestro manages firmware for all connected devices from a single interface:
- Scheduled updates — set a maintenance window (e.g. 02:00–04:00 Tuesday) and cnMaestro updates all devices in a network group automatically.
- Manual push — update specific devices or AP groups on demand from the cnMaestro dashboard.
- Staged rollout — update a subset of APs first to verify firmware before rolling out site-wide. Reduces risk on large deployments.
Firmware images are hosted by Cambium and downloaded by devices directly — no manual image transfer to switches or APs required.
Monitoring and Alerts
Once onboarded, cnMaestro provides:
- Real-time device status, client counts, and throughput per AP
- Alert on device offline, high interference, or rogue AP detection
- Historical data for capacity planning
All dashboards are accessible via browser — no VPN to the site is required for routine monitoring.
