Changing the Admin Password on a Dahua IP Camera
Changing the admin password is a mandatory commissioning step. Dahua devices ship requiring the installer to set a password on first initialisation, but circumstances arise where the password needs to be changed: handover to a new site owner, compromise of credentials, or routine security policy renewal.
This guide applies to Dahua IP cameras accessed through the camera's own web interface.
Important Notes Before Starting
- Dahua IP cameras have fixed default usernames (admin, user, and operator). The username cannot be modified — only the password can be changed.
- Change the password on all accounts, not just admin, to ensure maximum security.
- If the camera is connected to an NVR, update the NVR's channel credentials after changing the camera password to prevent the NVR losing the connection.
Password Requirements
Dahua enforces a minimum password complexity policy. A compliant password must contain:
- At least 8 characters
- At least one lowercase letter (a–z)
- At least one uppercase letter (A–Z)
- At least one number (0–9)
- At least one symbol (e.g. ! @ # $ % ^ & *)

Step-by-Step
1. Access the camera web interface
Enter the camera's IP address in a browser and log in using the current admin credentials.
2. Navigate to Account Settings
Select Setup > System > Account.
3. Open the account to edit
Click the pencil (edit) icon to the right of the admin account row.
4. Check Modify Password
Check the box labelled Modify Password. This reveals the password change fields.
5. Enter the password details

6. Save the change
Click Save. A confirmation message — "Modify User Succeeded" — should appear at the bottom of the screen. If an error appears, verify that the new password meets the complexity requirements and that the old password is correct.
7. Update downstream systems
If the camera is added to an NVR, update the NVR channel to use the new password. If the camera is accessed via DMSS, update the credentials in the app's device settings.
