Naim Streaming: Network Extenders and Mesh Wi-Fi Guide
Naim streaming products demand a stable, low-latency network connection to deliver consistent playback and reliable app control. This article covers what works, what to avoid, and how to diagnose problems when the network is the likely cause.
Do You Need a New Router?
Not always. Most modern routers work with Naim products. Performance depends on router age and quality, Wi-Fi coverage across the property, and total device load on the network.
If the existing router is more than five years old or is an ISP-supplied budget unit, a replacement is worth considering. Look for dual-band (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz), Gigabit Ethernet ports, and Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) or Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) support.
HomePlugs and Mains Extenders — Avoid
Naim does not recommend HomePlugs or powerline adapters. These route data over the mains wiring, which introduces electrical noise that can disrupt the data stream and degrade audio performance. Powerline adapters also create variable-latency links that the Focal & Naim app may struggle to traverse reliably.
Use wired Ethernet or a quality mesh system instead.
Wireless Extenders — Use with Caution
Standard wireless extenders (also called range extenders or repeaters) create a secondary subnet. The Focal & Naim app may lose contact with the Naim device if the phone connects to the main router while the Naim product connects through the extender, or vice versa.
If a wireless extender must be used, configure it to broadcast exactly the same SSID and password as the main router, with seamless roaming enabled (band steering and AP mode, not NAT mode). Devices should then roam between access points on a single subnet.
Mesh Networks — Recommended Over Extenders
Mesh systems are broadly compatible with Naim products and are the preferred solution where Ethernet runs are not feasible. However, they introduce their own considerations:
- Mesh nodes relay data through each other back to the gateway. Long chains of nodes can add latency and packet loss that affects streaming reliability.
- Smartphones compensate for lost packets; Naim devices require clean, uninterrupted streams.
- If playback drops correlate with the phone switching mesh nodes, the issue is likely node-to-node handoff latency.
Tips for Mesh Installations

Naim notes that mesh compatibility varies across brands and firmware versions — testing is ongoing.
Running a Network Scan in the Focal & Naim App
If the network is suspected as the cause of playback issues, the built-in network scan provides signal and connectivity data for Naim support.
- Ensure the Focal & Naim app is updated to version 7.5 or above.
- Open the app and go to the My Devices screen.
- Tap the question mark (?) in the top-right corner.
- Note the User ID shown — Naim support may ask for this.
- Position the phone 3–5 metres from the main router.
- Tap Network Scan and wait for the scan to complete. Do not minimise the app during the scan.
Share the scan results with Naim support or your Habitech contact when logging a streaming fault.
